IN:SIGHT

In Kuala Terengganu (KT), traditional Malay boats were originally the primary mode of transportation, but they have since been supplanted by modern vehicles. The purpose of the IN:SIGHT visitor centre is to attract people's attention and impart stories about Terengganu boat making in order to revive the traditional expertise. IN:SIGHT visitor centre also serves the local community by collaborating with local small businesses and providing a gathering area where residents and tourists can enjoy the waterfront while savouring KT's cuisine. A hands-on workshop is nevertheless necessary to enrich visitors' experiences, as they will be able to create their own woodcraft pieces while being supervised by local experts, and will eventually return home with joy and a lasting memory.

DESIGN

CONCEPT

As to promote traditional boat making in Kuala Terengganu, IN:SIGHT visitor centre is designed to resemble a “perahu” - malay word for traditional boat. Instead of a literal translation, the visitor centre takes its cues from the process of boat making. One of the vital processes is wood plank bending which determine the overall shape of a “perahu”. The building has a curve form which represents the technique of wood bending. Besides, the timber cladding steel structural system mimic traditional boat frames.

The visitor centre also draws inspiration from the wisdom of traditional Malay architecture in terms of construction and sustainability. Ultimately, the concept is to symbolise the traditional expertise, serve the local community and introduce Kuala Terengganu’s lifestyle.
